Helping Children With Loss
Helping Children Navigate Grief & Loss
In a mental crisis world - the more we can help our children with emotional health - the better.
Give the children in your life healthier tools for dealing with life changes and events.
Children experience grief from many different events - death, divorce, moving, changing schools, being bullied, the loss of a pet, family changes and other significant losses.
Children learn how to respond to grief from the adults around them. With the best of intentions, we may try to make things better by saying “don’t cry,” encouraging them to be strong, distracting them, or quickly replacing what was lost. While meant to comfort, these responses can unintentionally teach children to hide or minimize what they are feeling.
Helping Children With Loss is designed to change that.
This educational program gives parents, caregivers, teachers, school counsellors and other adults practical tools for listening to children, supporting their emotional expression and helping them navigate loss without trying to fix, minimize or talk them out of what they're feeling.
The goal isn't to protect children from every painful experience. It's to give the adults in their lives better tools for helping them develop healthy skills for dealing with loss that they can carry with them throughout their lives.
When They’re Hurting, Knowing How to Help Matters
Children don’t always have the words to explain what grief feels like. Helping Children With Loss gives you practical tools to listen, respond and create a safe place for their feelings.
You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need the right tools to help them feel heard, understood and supported.

Helping Children With Loss is a 4-session educational program designed for parents, caregivers, educators, and other adults who want practical tools to better support children through grief and loss.
Rather than working directly with children, the program focuses on teaching you how to respond when a child is grieving. You'll explore some of the common but ineffective messages many of us learned about grief and discover healthier ways to listen, communicate, and create a safe space for children to express what they're feeling.
Throughout the four weeks, you'll learn how to recognize the impact of grief in a child's life, become a more active listener, identify the emotional energy surrounding grief events, and learn appropriate ways to help children give voice to what they're experiencing.
You will work with Carol, an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist®, certified by the Grief Recovery Institute®.
The program consists of 4 weekly sessions of approximately 2.5 hours each.
We will work through the program using the When Children Grieve book.
You'll complete guided reading and assignments between sessions to reinforce what you're learning.
You'll learn practical tools that can be used with children experiencing death, divorce, pet loss, moving, family changes, and many other losses.
The focus is not on fixing or taking away a child's feelings, but on becoming a safer and more effective listener and support person.
The goal is to give you tools you can continue using - not just for the loss a child may be experiencing today, but for the losses and changes they will encounter throughout life.
